How Rouge came to be
While growing potted herbs at a commercial scale for large Belgian distributors since 2017, we started experimenting with strawberries in late 2020. Using our in-house expertise and the existing knowledge of modern berry farming available in Europe, we developed our own fully integrated solution for berries.
After years of successes in our lab, we decided to bring our knowledge to Quebec and scale it. This seemed counter-intuitive to some, however we knew that Quebec had what it would take to make Rouge a success: a healthy appetite for strawberries, and access to affordable renewable hydroelectricity. Which is how in 2024 two members of our team found themselves with suitcases and cats in hand, making the transatlantic journey from Belgium to Quebec.
Since March 2024, our facility in L’Assomption, QC has been producing high-quality, pesticide-free strawberries non-stop for the markets of Quebec and New England. We are currently designing our next facility which will increase our production capacity in Quebec more than tenfold.
